About Spain

Spain, a country on Europe’s the Iberian Peninsula, includes 17 autonomous regions with diverse geography and cultures. The capital city Madrid is home to the Royal Palace and Prado museum, housing works by European masters. Segovia has a medieval castle (the Alcázar) and an intact Roman aqueduct. Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona, is defined by Antoni Gaudí’s whimsical modernist landmarks like the Sagrada Família church.

There are many famous and popular walking routes in Spain but we are more concerned with the walking routes around the La Nava area close to Villanueva del Trabuco and Malaga.

El Chorro Walk

Walking and rambling in El Chorro are very popular and local guides are available. The stunning scenery is breathtaking and El Chorro is definitely a good choice for this type of holiday. There are guided walks available to El Hacho, El Chorro and Carratraca which will take you through some of the most breathtaking scenery you have ever seen.

El Chorro is also perfectly placed as a resting point along a few long-distance paths, GR7 and GR249. Mostly notably, the GR7 (Gran Recorrido 7) is part of the longest path in Europe, the European trail E4, which travels for nearly 9000km from Tarifa (the Southernmost tip of Spain), through El Chorro, up through Spain, France, Andorra, back into France, then on through Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and into Greece. Some of the best signposting of the route is in Andalucía, so you can relax more whilst walking and enjoy the amazing scenery. The Great Malaga Path (Gran Senda de Malaga), GR249, is a 650km circular walk covering the Southern coastline from Nerja to Estepona and inland to Ronda, El Chorro, and Archidona. The path goes through 4 Natural Parks, 2 Nature Reserves and 3 Natural Sites. El Chorro is perfectly placed at the end of section 20 and the start of section 21. The Path Mountains of San Jorge is located in the Andalusian municipality of Villanueva del Trabuco.

We have the opportunity to discover the delights and natural values of the Mountains of San Jorge starting at the Fuente de los 101 Caños (Fountain of the 101 Spouts), following a path of singular beauty. The karstic morphology and the shapes giving evidence of this modelling of the earth are, doubtlessly, one of the great attractions for hikers.

The wild scenery of the mountains makes it difficult to climb San Jorge´s top. During the climbing, and as we go ahead on a lapiaz of sharp limestone, we can enjoy fantastic views over the basin of river Guadalhorce and of the mountain range south of it. See more.

Not everyone wants to be walking up mountains and very large hills, which is why the area around Villanueva del Trabuco is perfect for the ramblers.  From La Nava, you can head in any direction and find something interesting, beautiful or dramatic to see. There are small hills covered in olive groves, open fields of wheat or Asparagus, goats and horses are plentiful during the summer, they spend weeks outside grazing in the sunshine. You can even take in the tour of the Olive Oil production in the Spring months.

Villanueva del Trabuco is a 20-minute walk from La Nava, El Cortijuelo restaurants are 30 minutes and you have others even closer. Los Caños (man-made waterfall called the 100 pipes) is about 1 hour walking distance and has a picnic area. There is a designated walking route in Villanueva del Rosario with a lovely church halfway up that leads to a waterfall. This is a great picnic spot as well.

Take your time, check out the area and enjoy walking holidays in the Malaga sunshine.
